Tardy Policy

In my room a student can be assigned a school tardy and/or a classroom tardy.

School Tardy

Definition - Not being completely inside the room at the START of the bell. Any part of a student including backpacks, luggage carriers, or other things being manipulated by the student must be completely inside the plane of the door when the bell starts ringing.

Consequences - Every school tardy will result in filling out the school tardy form. School policy provides for two warning and then one hour detentions are assigned.

Failure to serve - Determined by an administrator.

Classroom Tardy

Definition - Not being at the assigned workstation when I begin taking attendance.

Consequences - Any student not at their assigned station when I start taking attendance will be assigned a classroom tardy and assigned time after school. Time assigned after school depends upon the length of the classroom tardy.

Failure to serve - Failure to serve the first classroom tardy will result in 30 minutes being assigned. Failure to serve the 30 minute detention will result in a discipline referral to the office with a recommendation of one hour being assigned with me. The administrator will probably follow my recommendation. Failure to serve this is an administrative matter.

Calculating the length of a classroom tardy - When I take attendance and I assign a classroom tardy I will inform the violator of how many minutes the classroom tardy is for. I use the ceiling function to determine the time. For example if class starts at 10:28 and I start taking attendance and see a student not at their assigned station at 10:30, they will be assigned a three minute classroom tardy. Why three minutes? I will assume it is not exactly 10:30 but between 10:30 and 10:31 and using the ceiling function, just like the phone companies, it is rounded up. Do not confuse the classroom tardy time and the time assigned after school, they are different.

Calculating the time assigned after school - The time assigned is calculated by taking the length of the classroom tardy times two OR five minutes, whichever is greater. The minimum time assigned is five minutes.

When to classroom tardies must be served - The student has three different times to serve a classroom tardy. Those times are after school the day it is assigned or before or after school the next day they are in attendance. If the first detention is skipped the 30 minute detention must be served after school or before school the next day. Failure to serve this will result in being sent to an administrator.

How to avoid ever getting a classroom tardy - when the bell sounds, begin going to the assigned workstation immediately. If you do this, you will never get a Classroom Tardy.

It is possible but unlikely to get a School tardy AND a classroom tardy at the same time. Here is an example - a student arrives to class three seconds late and gets a school tardy. A minute later I begin taking attendance and the student who earned a school tardy is away from his/her assigned workstation and is talking to another student. This would earn the student a classroom tardy. I will not assign both a school tardy and classroom tardy it a student arrives while I am taking attendance assuming the student goes directly to his/her assigned workstation.

Classroom Tardy - GOOD for me. I may have an assortment of tasks that can be executed in exchange for the elimination of the time assigned after school. The list of tasks that may include duck or frog barks, cleaning areas of the room, and other activities.
